Quality of life in patients with Tonsillar Cancer!

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Mortensen GL, Paaske PB.Patients perceive tonsil cancer as a strike at psycho-socially “vital organs”.Dan Med J. 2012 Sep;59(9):A4504.

Tonsil cancer (TC) is a type of head and neck cancer (HNC) that is predominantly associated with infection with human papilloma virus (HPV). In Denmark, the incidence of HPV-related HNC has increased fivefold over the past three decades. HNC more often affects men than women, and HPV-related HNC tends to affect younger age groups than other HNCs. The present study examined the long-term health-related quality of life (QoL) in patients with TC.

METHODS:

A medical anthropological approach was applied using individual qualitative interviews with seven former TC patients. The participants included men and women who had undergone various treatments, i.e. radiation therapy, chemotherapy and operation. Data were analyzed using a narrative methodology.

RESULTS:

Treatment sequelae peaked within the first three months and included severe pain in the radiated area, nausea and fatigue. Within this period, patients were unable to eat solid food and often had difficulty speaking. Half of the participants lost some of their hearing due to radiation. Even two years after treatment, most participants had persisting sequelae, mainly xerostomia, porous teeth and reduced mobility of the tongue and jaw. Fatigue and difficulties eating and communicating, in particular, had a very negative effect on the participants’ psycho-social QoL.

CONCLUSION:

This study allowed for a deeper understanding of the negative effects of HNC on patients’ QoL. These QoL effects ought to be included in future considerations of HPV vaccination of boys as well as girls.

Two hours with friend on Qualitative!!

Uncategorized Comments Off on Two hours with friend on Qualitative!!

Thanks to my one of best friends for giving me two hours on Qualitative data analysis with Invivo last Sunday. Already aware of Dedoose, I throughly enjoyed  discussing Invivo with my Amiga. . Discussing qualitative methods while dinning is great piece of quality itsfel. How  can we make every moment fruitful and use it effciently, that is what I am experiencing in this nourishing country.

*Coding in Invivo is called nodes.

* For example, suppose we are doing the research on romantic relationships… Then we can code transcript into noded like… pleasure, anger, love, affection, obsession. How obsessive  parner is in relationship, if this is the topic, then it is important to  highlight words

*Invivo give us the frequency of all words. Then it make the words bigger as per the word frequency, this is even available with google’s program.

*Kappa gives value when we compare the interpretation by various researchers on the same nodes.

Meeting with Columbia Professor!

I met one of Columbia Professors today, who has been doing extensive  qualitative research in India. I had qualitiful 10 minutes with this professor. She focussed light on her work in Rajasthan and how she is fond of Rajasthan and Udaipur. She is presently doing lot of work on  NGOs related things in India–How non governemnt organizations works inIndia.

“In our period it was more individual, now its more teamwork.

I still do it manually. Inivo just make it simple, it doenot do analysis.”

Her main foucs is on toursim now. Accroding to her, students are not that interested in  qualitative compared to quantitative. Probably, she hasn’t heard of our Lehman Professor 🙂

“The more I read the transcripts of the dinner conversation, listened to the tapes, and watched the videos, the more I became intrigued with the richness of dinner talk as a prime site of pragmatic socialization. ”

I just started reading this book, which entails beautiful description of conversation of Israeli Jewish families and American Jewish families when they dine together.  I am wondering how this book is so interesting in light of ethnographic and anthropological research 🙂

In Depth Interviews!

Uncategorized Comments Off on In Depth Interviews!

Conversation is the dollar of  qualitative research.

Researchers listen to dream, fear and hopes.

The interview is specific form of conversation where knowledge is produced.

Intimacy and mutual self-disclosure.

Researchers see the world through participant’s lens.

Recently there was gangrspe of one medical student and she was brutally beaten. Eventually she died in fighting for life after 15 days. The incident received international coverage and people demanded death penalty for the culprits. Now there is a need to study people attitude towards the death penalty.

Phenomenological research!

Uncategorized 1 Comment »
While thereis thin line of demarcation between narrative and phenomenology study, I am having difficulty to understand this hairline difference..Phenomenological research: it talks about lives of the concerned person. phenomenology of bad teaching…. Of multiple people..lts is similar to narrative when it comes to descriptive account, but unlike narrative, it has more than one or 2 people.1dentification of shared experiences.

Extrapolate some universe form of experiences..comparison of shared experiences…

Locate universal (general) nature of experiences..

For example:: live experiences of illegal immigrants when they have fear of getting deported…
Live experiences of restaurant workers when they are paid less..
Phenomenology study of single women..

3) shared experiences among various individual experiencing the same phenomena,,

4) Essence of experience.. Creat discourses. Empathize with …..of individual..

Discourse on meaning.. To get from your participants.. .. How that make you feel?

What that experience will be like.. Emotional experience. .. I was petrified. ..I was in ecstasy.. I was overwhelmed.,

One student was asked about the experience he felt of 2012 classes.. He says,” Oh God, instructor’s method of teaching was so unclear that I literally feel frustrated. ”

Response could be good if question is asked in better empathic way..

Here comes bedside manners by doctors.

Elements of phenomenology :
1) lived experience
2) conscious process
One need to be very gentle in asking questions..

Interpretations of experiences…
Gradients of experiences  accounts increase.

Types:

1) hermeneutic
2)psychological phenomena everything is perceived fresh

Interpretation of meaning and significance.
Revisiting event.. Looking that event in new vein,, with new vision..

Change in interpretation of same experience when u r young and when u r old.
If u lost ur child and ur parents also lost ur child.. Then u can use psychological phenomenology..

.
1 .Identify phen..
2.bracket
3.Data
4.interpretation
5.description: textural (what) and structural (how)

When compared to narrative, in phenomenological research, we are more concerned of phenomena.
Multiple interpretation.

Triangulation!!!

Uncategorized Comments Off on Triangulation!!!

ASIF PATEL

Doesn’t it sound funny as Geometry in qualitative research methods? I was wondering why this word exist in Qualitative dictionary. From two landmarks, you can decide third landmark. I do not know how much accurate I am in interpreting the meaning of this mathematical term here.

Traingulation can be from..

more than one theory,

more than one researchers,

more than one participant

more than one method

and finally more than???? fifth one I am leaving to curiosity… Guess????

For example, there are two students, who are evaluating the confused teaching method of instructor, and then another third student joins and do the research on confused style of teaching, as a result of triangulation, we can conclude that the concerned instructor is confused  and it confusions can affect students learning process. This is an example of triangulation with number of researchers.
